Winter’s Breath

The Capitol Hill Chorale presented Winter’s Breath in December 2006, joined by the Georgetown University Chamber Singers as Choir II for a program of sacred choral music spanning four centuries alongside seasonal carols.

The program opened with Heinrich Schütz’s “German” Magnificat, sung jointly by both choirs, before moving to three works by Arvo Pärt — including Bogoroditse Djevo with soloist Holly Degn — and a set of motets and Mass movements by Tomás Luis de Victoria performed by the Georgetown singers. The Capitol Hill Chorale followed with music by Alexander Tcherepnin, Alexander Gretchaninoff, and Paul Liljestrand’s A Christmas Triad, while the Georgetown ensemble contributed Renaissance works by William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Jacques Arcadelt, and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.

The Chorale closed the printed program with a Ukrainian/South Russian folk setting, A v Jerusalime, featuring soloists Thea Austen and Parker Jayne, followed by a set of Christmas carols arranged by Edward Shippen Barnes, Edward L. Stauff, and John Rutter, and Sergei Rachmaninov’s Bogoroditse Djevo.
