Wow, what a season it’s been and there’s still more in store! The Chorale performed to packed houses in December with Hesperus, explored American roots music and the Shape Note tradition in our March concerts, and had a tremendously successful (and delicious!) spaghetti dinner fundraiser in early May. In addition, we welcomed Sarah Markovits as our Vocal Coach and Kevin Siegfried as our Composer in Residence, both of which are firsts for the Chorale.
Despite all that’s already happened this season, the Chorale has a busy couple weeks coming up in late May and early June. Our upcoming concert is more than just a performance for our loyal audience base; it’s also preparation for the Chorale’s first studio recording and a reunion between the Chorale and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Capitol Hill.
Following the Chorale’s usual two-performance concert weekend, we will spend the next week recording the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in its original Georgian. This recording will be the first ever in Georgian—a real boon for Georgian music scholars as many have never heard the work in its entirety—and it will be the first studio recording ever done by the Chorale. We are looking forward to working with Flawn Williams, a respected recording engineer from right here in DC.
Another special element to this concert and recording is the opportunity to renew our collaboration with St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, an organization with much history on the Hill. The Chorale has sorely missed our relationship with St. Joe’s in the past few years and we are very much looking forward to sharing the gorgeous space and amazing acoustics with you on May 31 and June 1.
